Access Control: Automatic Gates and Entry Systems Around Charlotte

A gate that opens for the right people and stays shut for everyone else. We install electric gate operators and the controls that run them.

Access Control Services

Access control starts with a gate that moves freely. The operator and the entry devices are chosen after that, to suit how the entrance is used.

How an Automated Entrance Fits Together

There are four parts. The gate closes the opening. The operator moves the gate. The entry devices tell the operator when to open. The safety devices stop the gate if something is in its path. Each part depends on the one before it, which is why we look at the gate first.

  • Gate: a driveway swing gate or a sliding or cantilever gate, framed stiff enough to be pushed by a motor.
  • Operator: swing arm or slide operator, sized to the weight and length of the gate and to how many times a day it cycles.
  • Entry devices: remotes, keypads, card or fob readers, intercoms, and vehicle sensors for automatic exit.
  • Safety devices: photo eyes and sensing edges that stop and reverse the gate when it meets an obstruction.
  • Power: a hard-wired feed or, on some residential gates, a solar panel and battery.

Residential and Commercial Entrances

At a home, the usual setup is a swing or sliding driveway gate with remotes in the cars, a keypad at the entrance for guests and deliveries, and a sensor that opens the gate on the way out. At a business, the questions change: how many vehicles a day, who needs a credential, what happens after hours, and how emergency vehicles get in.

Fire and emergency access requirements for automated gates are set by the local fire marshal and differ between jurisdictions. For a commercial or multifamily entrance, confirm them before the equipment is chosen.

What We Need From the Site

Power at the gate is the first item. An electrician normally runs the feed and any conduit under the drive, and it is far easier before paving than after. We also need to know the slope of the driveway, the clear space beside or behind the opening, and how far the gate sits from the road, since a car should be able to pull fully off the street while the gate opens.

Access Control by Fence Type

Each of these pages covers one kind of fence or gate in detail: how we install it, when to replace it, and what Charlotte area ground and rules do to it.

Gates that can be automated

Access Control Questions

Can you automate a gate I already have?

Sometimes. The gate has to swing or roll freely by hand, the frame has to be stiff, and the posts have to be solid. A gate that sags or binds will wear out an operator quickly. We check it and tell you whether it can be automated as it stands or should be replaced first.

Do automatic gates need electrical power at the entrance?

Most do. A hard-wired feed is the most dependable source, and an electrician normally installs it. Some residential operators can run from a solar panel and battery where bringing power to the gate is impractical.

What happens to an automatic gate when the power goes out?

Operators have a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand, and many can be fitted with battery backup that keeps the gate working through an outage. Ask about backup when the operator is chosen.

Is an automatic gate safe around children and pets?

A properly equipped gate has photo eyes and sensing edges that stop and reverse it when something is in the way. Those devices are part of every automated gate we install. They need to be kept clean and tested from time to time.

Do you install the gate as well as the operator?

Yes. We build and hang the gate and install the operator and controls. See gate installation for the gate itself.
