Which Page Should You Read?

If your property is in a city with an office, open that office's page for its street address, its own phone number, a map and the neighborhoods it covers. If your city is listed under service areas, open the page for that city. It names the office that handles the work there and covers what is specific to building a fence in that town.

The city matters more than most people expect. Fence height limits, permit steps and historic district reviews are set town by town and county by county, and a homeowners association can add its own list on top. A fence that is fine in one town can need a different height or a written approval a few miles away, so read the page for your own address before you settle on a design.

The state line matters too. Rock Hill and the rest of York County follow South Carolina rules, and buried utilities there are marked through SC811. Everything on the North Carolina side goes through NC811. Either way the request has to be in before any post hole is dug.
