Residential Fencing: Backyard Fences Installed and Replaced Around Charlotte
QC Fence Contractors builds new fences and replaces worn-out ones for homeowners across the Charlotte metro. Estimates are free and written.
Residential Fence Services
Most of our residential work is one of two jobs: a fence where there was none, or a new fence where the old one has reached the end. Design help and repairs are available too.
- Residential fence installation
A new fence on a lot that has none, or a new run added to an existing one. Measured, laid out and built on site.
- Residential fence replacement
Tear out and haul away the old fence, then build the new one on fresh posts and footings.
- Custom residential fence design
Picket layout, height changes, cap and trim, mixed materials and gate placement worked out before we build.
- Residential fence repair
Posts, pickets, panels and gates fixed when the rest of the fence still has life in it.
What Homeowners Around Charlotte Ask Us to Build
A backyard fence usually has one main job. It keeps a dog in, screens a patio from the neighbors, puts a barrier around a pool, or marks a line the builder never marked. The job decides the fence. A six foot wood privacy fence, a four foot black aluminum fence and a split rail fence with wire are all good fences, and each one is wrong for somebody.
We install wood fencing, vinyl fencing, aluminum fencing, chain link fencing, wrought iron and ornamental steel, cedar and composite. If you already know the look you want, the fence types index goes straight to it.
What the Ground and the Rules Do to a Fence Here
Piedmont red clay holds water. A post set in a hole that cannot drain sits wet for most of the year, and that is where wood posts fail first. Footing depth, how the concrete is crowned at the top, and whether the posts are wood or steel matter more to how long the fence stands than the pickets do.
Few lots around Charlotte are flat. On a slope a fence is either stepped, with level sections that drop at each post, or racked, with the rails following the grade. Stepping leaves triangular gaps under each section, which matters if the fence is for a small dog. We look at the grade during the estimate and tell you which way the fence will run.
Many neighborhoods have an HOA that settles height, material and color before the owner gets a say, and cities and counties set their own height limits and permit rules. Those rules differ from one jurisdiction to the next, so check with your HOA and local zoning office early. We build to whatever your approval says.
How a Residential Job Runs
- 1. Estimate. We walk the line with you, measure it, note the grade and the gates, and give you a written price. There is no charge for the estimate.
- 2. Approvals. You send the plan to your HOA if you have one. We can supply the fence description and layout they ask for.
- 3. Utility marking. Buried lines are marked before any hole is dug.
- 4. Posts. Posts are set in concrete and left to cure.
- 5. Rails, pickets and gates. The fence is built between the posts, gates are hung and latches are adjusted.
- 6. Cleanup. Spoil, offcuts and the old fence, if there was one, leave with the crew.

Residential Fencing Questions
What kinds of residential fences do you install?
Wood privacy fences in dog ear, shadowbox, board on board, horizontal and semi-privacy layouts, plus vinyl, aluminum, chain link, split rail, cedar, composite and ornamental steel. We also hang walk gates and driveway gates.
Do you replace old fences or only build new ones?
Both. New installation and full replacement are the bulk of our residential work. On a fence replacement we take down and haul away the old fence, pull or cut the old footings, and build on new posts.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a fence?
It depends on where you live and how tall the fence is. Height limits and permit rules are set by each city or county, and HOAs add their own rules on material and color. Check with both before you order. We can give you the fence description and layout drawing they usually ask for.
How long does it take to build a backyard fence?
It depends on the length of the run, the material, the number of gates and the weather. The written estimate includes the schedule for your job, so you know the timing before you agree to anything.
Which areas do you cover for residential fencing?
The Charlotte metro in both states. We have offices across the Charlotte metro in North Carolina and in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and we work in Charlotte, Matthews, Harrisburg, Ballantyne, Ashbrook, Gastonia and the towns between them.
