Privacy Fencing: Solid Wood, Vinyl and Composite Backyard Fences

A privacy fence blocks the view into your yard. The material and the picket layout decide how completely, and for how long.

Privacy Fence Installation and Replacement

Privacy is the most common reason people call us. A neighbor has built close, a road runs behind the lot, or the patio simply feels exposed. A solid fence at six feet solves most of it, and eight feet handles a raised deck next door where the rules allow that height.

QC Fence Contractors installs and replaces privacy fences across the Charlotte metro in wood, vinyl and composite.

Three Materials, Three Trade-Offs

  • Wood: the lowest cost to install and the most flexible on slopes and odd layouts. It weathers and needs the most upkeep.
  • Vinyl: solid panels with no gaps and nothing to paint. Fixed panel sizes and a limited color range.
  • Composite: the look of wood without rot. The highest cost of the three.

How Private Is Private

A side-by-side wood picket fence is solid when it is built and shows thin gaps once the pickets dry. If that matters to you, choose board on board, where the pickets overlap. Shadowbox blocks a straight-on view and lets you see through at an angle, in exchange for airflow and two finished faces. Stockade and dog ear are the straightforward solid layouts.

Height is limited by local zoning and often by an HOA, and front yards are usually held lower than back yards. Rules vary between Charlotte and the surrounding towns, so check your address before settling on eight feet.

A fence blocks sight lines. It softens noise a little and will not silence a busy road.

Privacy Fencing Questions

How tall can my privacy fence be?

Six feet is the common backyard height, and eight feet is built where it is permitted. The limit comes from your city or county zoning rules and from your HOA if you have one. Check both before ordering.

Which privacy fence has no gaps?

Vinyl tongue and groove panels and board on board wood fences. A standard side-by-side wood fence opens small gaps as the pickets dry.

What is the difference between dog ear and stockade?

The picket top. Dog ear pickets have the two top corners clipped. Stockade pickets come to a point. Both are solid privacy layouts.

Wood or vinyl for privacy?

Wood costs less up front and handles slopes better. Vinyl costs more and needs almost no upkeep. If you plan to stay in the house a long time and dislike maintenance, vinyl usually wins.
