Aluminum Fencing: Open Picket Fence for Pools, Lakes and Front Yards

Black aluminum marks a boundary without hiding what is behind it, and it does not rust. It is our most common fence for pools and lake lots.

Aluminum Fence Installation and Replacement

Aluminum fence is made of powder coated pickets and rails assembled into panels that mount between posts. It has the look of iron at a fraction of the weight, and because aluminum does not rust it suits wet locations where steel would need regular painting.

QC Fence Contractors installs aluminum fence across the Charlotte metro. The photos on this page are from our jobs, including lakefront lots and a boat dock gate.

Where Aluminum Works Best

  • Around pools, with self-closing gates. See pool safety fences.
  • On lake and golf course lots where the view is the point.
  • Across front yards and along driveways.
  • Around apartment communities, offices and storefront patios.
  • Combined with wood or vinyl privacy fence on the sides of a lot.

Choosing the Panel

Panels differ in top style, picket spacing, height and grade. Flat top panels have a rail across the top. Spear top panels let the pickets run through. For small dogs, panels with closer picket spacing at the bottom keep a puppy from slipping between the pickets.

Grade is the part that is easy to overlook. Residential, commercial and industrial grades use progressively heavier pickets, rails and posts. Residential grade is right for a backyard. A fence along a parking lot needs commercial grade.

Aluminum panels rack to follow a slope, which keeps the bottom rail parallel to the ground without gaps. Very steep grades need panels made for it or have to be stepped.

Aluminum Fencing Questions

Does aluminum fence rust?

No. Aluminum does not rust, and the powder coat protects the finish. That is why it is used around pools and near water.

Is aluminum fence strong enough?

For defining a boundary, enclosing a pool and keeping most dogs in, yes. It is not a high security fence and it will bend under a hard impact. For security, look at ornamental steel.

Can aluminum be used for a pool fence?

Yes, it is the most common pool fence we install. The panel has to meet the barrier rules for height and openings, and the gates have to close and latch by themselves. See pool safety fences.

Will an aluminum fence keep a small dog in?

With the right panel. Standard picket spacing lets small dogs through. Panels with doubled pickets along the bottom close that gap.
