Pool Fencing: Barrier Fences and Self-Closing Gates for Backyard Pools
A pool fence is a safety barrier first. We install barrier fencing and self-closing gates, and replace fences that no longer do the job.
Pool Fence Installation and Replacement
The fence around a pool exists to keep a small child from reaching the water alone. Everything about it follows from that: the height, the size of the openings, the gap at the bottom, and above all the gates, which have to close and latch without anyone remembering to do it.
QC Fence Contractors installs permanent pool fencing across the Charlotte metro in aluminum, vinyl and chain link, and builds wood privacy fence around pool yards. We do not sell removable mesh pool fence or glass panels.
What the Rules Cover
Residential pool barriers are regulated through the building code in both North Carolina and South Carolina, and the local building department enforces it. The requirements deal with barrier height, how large any opening may be, how close the fence sits to the ground, how climbable the outside face is, and how gates swing, close and latch.
The details differ between the two states and can change when a new code edition is adopted. Our pool safety fences page sets out the specifics with links to the official sources. Before we quote, confirm with your pool builder or building department which barrier your permit calls for.
Materials for a Pool Yard
- Aluminum: the usual choice. It does not rust, it keeps the pool visible from the house, and pool-rated panels are widely available.
- Vinyl or wood privacy fence: screens the pool from neighbors. It also hides the pool from you, which some parents do not want.
- Black chain link: economical for long runs, in a mesh size that meets the barrier rule.

Pool Fencing Questions
Does my pool need a fence?
Residential pools in North Carolina and South Carolina are subject to barrier requirements in the building code. Your building department or pool contractor can tell you exactly what applies to your permit. See pool safety fences for the details and sources.
Can my existing backyard fence serve as the pool barrier?
Possibly, if it meets the barrier requirements for height, openings and gates. Many yard fences fall short on the gates. We can look at what you have and tell you what would need to change.
What kind of gate does a pool fence need?
One that closes and latches on its own every time. Hinge tension and latch position are adjusted at installation and should be checked each season.
Do you install removable mesh or glass pool fencing?
No. We install permanent fencing: aluminum, vinyl, chain link and wood.
