Gate Services: Walk Gates, Driveway Gates and Sliding Gates in Charlotte
The gate is the only part of a fence that moves, so it is the part that fails first. We install new gates and replace ones that have given up.
Gate Services We Offer
New gates go in with a new fence or get added to an existing one. Worn-out gates are replaced along with their posts. Repairs are available when the frame and posts are still good.
- Gate installation
New walk gates, double gates and driveway gates, hung on posts sized for them.
- Gate replacement
A new gate and, where needed, new gate posts in place of one that sags, drags or has rotted.
- Gate repair
Hinges, latches, rollers and sagging frames put right when the gate itself is sound.
Kinds of Gates We Build and Hang
- Walk gates in wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link and steel, matched to the fence they sit in.
- Double gates for mowers, trailers and backyard access.
- Driveway swing gates, single or double leaf, in wood on steel frames, aluminum and ornamental steel.
- Sliding and cantilever gates for wide or sloped entrances.
- Pool gates that close and latch on their own.
- Steel-framed gates for dumpster enclosures.
- Gates prepared for an operator, or automated at the time of installation.
Why Gates Fail and How We Build Against It
A fence panel is held at both ends. A gate hangs from one side, and all of its weight pulls on that post every hour of every day. A gate post set to the same depth as a line post will lean. A wide wood gate without a steel frame or a diagonal brace will rack into a parallelogram. Hinges sized for looks instead of load will wear until the latch misses.
We set gate posts deeper and in more concrete than line posts, frame wide gates in steel, brace wood gates so the load runs back to the bottom hinge, and use hinges and latches that adjust. On sloped driveways we check the swing arc before choosing between a swing gate and a slider, because a gate that opens uphill hits the pavement.
Swing or Slide
Swing gates are simpler and suit most residential driveways. They need level ground through the whole arc and room to open without blocking a car. Sliding gates need neither, but they need clear space beside the opening equal to the gate width plus a tail section. A cantilever gate rides on rollers above the ground, so there is no track across the drive to clog with leaves, gravel or ice.
Either type can be automated. See automatic gates for operators and gate security systems for keypads, readers and intercoms.

Gate Services Questions
Can you add a gate to a fence that is already there?
Yes. We cut in the opening, set new gate posts in concrete and hang the gate. It works on wood, vinyl, aluminum and chain link fences. Matching an older fence exactly depends on whether the same profile and color are still made.
How wide can a gate be?
Walk gates are usually sized for a person or a mower. Double gates and driveway gates span much wider openings. Past a certain width a swing leaf gets heavy enough that a sliding or cantilever gate is the better choice.
Should I choose a swing gate or a sliding gate for my driveway?
Swing gates suit level driveways with room for the leaves to open. Sliding gates suit sloped drives, short aprons and wide openings, as long as there is space beside the opening for the gate to roll back.
Can a gate be automated later?
Often, yes, if the gate and posts were built for it. An operator puts extra force on the frame and hinges. Tell us at installation if you may automate later and we will build the gate and posts to take it.
Do you replace only the gate, or the posts too?
It depends on the posts. If they are plumb and solid, a new gate can hang on them. If the old gate sagged because a post leaned, the post has to be replaced or the new gate will do the same.
