Driveway Gate Installation: Swing or Slide, Manual or Automated

A driveway gate closes the vehicle opening in a fence line or stands alone between columns at the entrance to a property. QC Fence Contractors builds and installs them for homeowners and businesses around Charlotte who want to control who drives in, keep kids and dogs off the road, or finish the front of a property.

Swing Gate or Slide Gate: Let the Driveway Decide

This choice comes down to the ground, and taste comes second. A swing gate needs a clear, fairly level arc the full length of each leaf. A slide gate needs a straight run of fence line beside the opening that is a little longer than the opening itself.

  • Flat drive with room to swing inward: a single or double swing gate is the simplest and least expensive to build and automate.
  • Drive that climbs steeply from the road: a gate swinging uphill will hit the pavement, so slide it or swing it the other way if space allows.
  • Short driveway where a car would sit in the swing path: slide.
  • No room along the fence line for a gate to travel: swing.
  • Wide opening over about 16 ft: a double swing or a slide, since a single leaf that long is hard on hinges and posts.

Wood, Aluminum and Steel Driveway Gates

Wood gates match a privacy fence and hide the yard from the street. Wood is heavy and moves with moisture, so we build wood driveway gates on a welded steel frame. A frame made only of lumber sags, and a sagging gate drags and tears up an opener.

Aluminum is light, does not rust and comes in the same picket styles as aluminum fence, which makes it the easy choice for an HOA neighborhood. Light weight means smaller operators and less strain on hinges.

Steel and ornamental iron gates are the strongest and allow custom scrollwork, arched tops and solid plate backing. They need heavier posts and footings and a good finish, since bare steel rusts in Carolina humidity.

Manual Now or Automated From the Start

A manual gate with a drop rod and a latch works fine for a farm entrance or a gate opened twice a week. For a daily driver, most people tire of getting out in the rain, and the gate ends up left open.

Automation adds an operator, a power source, safety devices and a way to open it: remotes, a keypad, a phone app, an exit sensor in the drive or an intercom. If you might automate later, tell us now. We can size the posts and hinges for an operator and run conduit under the drive before it is harder to do. We install the operator and access controls as well as the gate.

How We Install a Driveway Gate

Gate posts carry a moving load that fence posts never see, so they are larger and set deeper in bigger concrete footings. On a double swing gate we set both hinge posts, let the concrete cure fully, then hang and align the leaves so they meet evenly at the center.

For automated gates the operator is mounted on its own pad or bracket, wired, and set up with its limit and force adjustments. Operators are built to the UL 325 standard and automated gates to ASTM F2200, which together call for entrapment protection such as photo eyes and sensing edges wherever a moving gate could trap someone. We install and test those devices as part of the job. They are not optional extras.

Replacing a Sagging or Failed Driveway Gate

A gate that drags, will not latch or has to be lifted shut is telling you one of three things: the hinge post has leaned, the frame has racked or the hinges are worn out. Adjusting hinges buys time. If the post has moved in the ground, the fix is a new post and footing.

Replacement is also the moment to correct the original design. We often swap a failed all-wood gate for a steel-framed one that looks the same from the street, convert a swing gate that hits the pavement to a slide, or pair a new gate with an operator. Sound existing columns can frequently be reused with new hinge hardware.

Driveway Gates on Charlotte-Area Lots

Red clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that seasonal movement is what tips an undersized gate post. We size footings for the gate weight and the soil, and deeper is cheap insurance here. Sloped driveways are common across Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and York counties, so we check the swing arc with a level line before recommending a gate type.

Set the gate far enough back from the road that a vehicle, or a truck with a trailer, can pull fully off the street while the gate opens. Local zoning, HOA covenants and fire department access rules can all affect gate placement and height, and gated entrances on shared or commercial drives often need a way for emergency responders to get in. Check requirements for your address, and we will build to them.

Questions About Driveway Gates

Is a swing gate or a sliding gate better for a driveway?

Swing gates cost less and have fewer parts, so they are the better choice when the drive is level and there is room for the arc. Sliding gates are better on driveways that slope up from the street, on short drives and where wind load on a solid gate is a concern.

Should a driveway gate swing in or out?

Inward, toward the property, in nearly every case. A gate that swings outward can block the sidewalk or road and is exposed to traffic. The exception is a driveway that rises steeply from the entrance, where an inward swing would hit the pavement. A slide gate is often the cleaner answer there.

Can you automate my existing driveway gate?

Often yes, if the gate swings freely, hangs level and its posts are solid. An operator will not fix a sagging gate. It will wear itself out pushing against the bind. We inspect the gate, posts and hinges first and tell you whether to automate as is, repair first or replace.

What if there is no power at the end of my driveway?

There are two routes. We can have power trenched from the house to the gate, or use a solar-charged, battery-powered operator. Solar suits residential gates with moderate daily use and decent sun at the gate. Heavy gates and high-traffic entrances do better on hardwired power.

Why do wood driveway gates sag?

A wide wood gate is heavy, and wood joints loosen as the lumber takes on and loses moisture. Over time the latch side drops. We prevent it by building the wood onto a welded steel frame with adjustable hinges and by setting hinge posts in footings sized for the load.

How wide should a driveway gate be?

Make the opening at least as wide as the driveway, and wider if delivery trucks, trailers or emergency vehicles need access. Twelve feet is a common residential width and many customers choose fourteen or sixteen. We measure your drive and the turn in from the road before recommending a size.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a driveway gate?

Requirements differ by town, county and neighborhood. Some jurisdictions regulate gate height or setback from the road, electrical work for an operator may need its own permit, and most HOAs require architectural approval. Check with your local zoning office and HOA. We can supply drawings and specifications for the application.
