Residential Fence Repair: Fix It When the Rest of the Fence Is Sound

We repair fences that are worth repairing. If the posts are failing along the whole run, we will tell you, and price a replacement instead.

Repair Makes Sense When the Damage Is Local

A tree limb through one section, a post clipped by a car, a gate that has dropped on its hinges: these are repairs. The rest of the fence is healthy and the fix puts it back the way it was.

Our main work is new fence installation and full replacement, and we take on residential repairs across the Charlotte metro when the fence around the damage is still sound. We look at the whole fence before pricing a repair, because a fix is only as good as what it is attached to.

Repairs We Commonly Make

  • Replacing a broken or rotted post and resetting it in new concrete.
  • Replacing split, cupped or missing pickets and rails on wood fences.
  • Swapping a cracked vinyl panel, rail or post.
  • Replacing bent aluminum sections after an impact.
  • Re-stretching chain link fabric and replacing bent top rail.
  • Re-hanging gates and replacing hinges and latches.

When Repair Stops Being Worth It

Wood posts in the same fence were set at the same time in the same soil. When three or four have rotted at the ground line, the others are not far behind, and paying to replace them one storm at a time costs more than doing the fence once. The same goes for a fence where most of the pickets are split or the rails no longer hold a fastener.

A quick test: push on the top of several posts along the run. If they move at the base, the problem is the posts, and new pickets will not solve it. In that case a full fence replacement is the better use of the money, and we will say so in the estimate.

Matching is the other limit. New pressure treated pine is lighter than weathered wood and takes time to gray. Some vinyl and aluminum profiles are no longer made, so an exact panel may not exist. We tell you up front how close the match will be.

Storm and Impact Damage

After a storm or a vehicle strike, take photos before anything is moved. If you plan to file an insurance claim, your insurer will want them, and our written estimate can go with the claim. We can make the yard secure again by resetting what is salvageable while the permanent repair is scheduled, which matters if a dog or a pool depends on the fence.

Residential Fence Repair Questions

Do you repair fences you did not install?

Yes. Most repair calls are for fences built by someone else. We look at how it was built and what failed, then tell you whether a repair will hold or whether the fence is at the point where replacing it makes more sense.

Can you replace a single fence post?

Yes. The old post and its concrete come out, a new post is set in fresh concrete, and the rails are reattached. If the neighboring posts are soft too, we will point that out so one repair does not turn into several visits.

Will new pickets match my old fence?

In size and shape, yes. In color, not right away. New wood is lighter than weathered wood and takes time to blend in. We do not stain or paint fences, so color matching with a finish would be a separate job.

My gate sags and will not latch. Is that a repair?

Often it is. A sagging gate can be a loose hinge, a racked frame, or a gate post that has leaned. Hardware and frames are quick to fix. A leaning post has to be reset. See gate repair for more on what goes wrong.

How do I know whether to repair or replace?

Count the failures. One bad post or one damaged section is a repair. Posts failing along the run, widespread rot, or a fence that leans in several places points to replacement. We give you an honest read during the estimate.
