Semi-Privacy Fence Installation: Spaced Pickets That Screen Without Sealing the Yard

A semi-privacy fence is a full-height wood fence with a deliberate, even gap between pickets. It is for homeowners who want to blur the view into the yard and contain kids or pets, while keeping light and breeze that a solid fence would block.

How Much Gap Makes a Fence Semi-Private

The gap is the whole design. A narrow space, well under the width of a finger, gives a fence that looks nearly solid from the street and only shows movement behind it. Widen the space and you get more light and air, and more of the yard becomes visible. Somewhere past an inch or so the fence stops screening and becomes a tall picket fence.

We set the gap with you before building, and we account for shrinkage when we do. Pickets get narrower as they dry, so the space you see on day one grows a little. A fence that should end up with a modest gap needs to start with a tighter one. Uniform spacing matters as much as the size, because uneven gaps are easy to spot along a long run.

Best Uses for Semi-Privacy Fences

  • Yards that need airflow in summer
  • Windy or exposed lots
  • Gardens and shaded planting beds along the fence
  • Street-facing side yards
  • Owners who find a solid fence too closed in

Flat Top or Scalloped Top

We have built 6 ft semi-privacy fences in two top profiles, and both are in our job photos.

A flat top keeps every picket at the same height for a straight, level line. It is the simpler look and suits most houses. A scalloped top dips in a shallow curve between posts, with the high points at the posts and the low point at mid-span. It gives the fence a softer, more traditional character and is popular along front and side yards that face the street. The curve takes extra layout and cutting, so a scalloped fence costs more than a flat one. The low point of each scallop is also the effective height of the fence there, which matters for a jumping dog.

Installing a Spaced-Picket Fence

The frame is the same as for a privacy fence. After the line is set and utilities are marked, posts go in concrete and rails are run between them.

Pickets are then hung using a spacer gauge so every gap is identical. We check plumb every few boards, since a small lean compounds across a section and turns parallel gaps into wedges. On a scalloped fence the pickets are installed long, the curve is marked from post to post, and the tops are cut to the line. Gates are laid out so the picket spacing continues across them without a doubled-up board or an odd gap at the latch.

  • Gap chosen with you and adjusted for shrinkage
  • Spacer gauge used on every picket
  • Plumb checked throughout each section
  • Scallops marked and cut in place

Replacing a Solid Fence With Semi-Privacy

Some customers switch to this style after a solid fence blew over or after a shaded yard stayed damp behind one. Others simply want the yard to feel less enclosed.

Replacement involves removing the existing fence and the concrete around its posts, then building new. If the old posts are relatively recent and still firm, we check whether they can stay. Often they cannot, and reusing questionable posts under new pickets is a poor trade. Before changing from solid to spaced, check two things: whether your HOA allows it on your lot, and whether anything in the yard, such as a pool, requires a specific type of barrier. We can go over both during the estimate.

Airflow and Storm Wind in the Charlotte Area

Still, humid air is the summer norm here. A solid 6 ft fence around a small yard can trap it, and the patio feels hotter for it. Spaced pickets let a breeze move through at ground level, and the grass and plantings along the fence line get more light.

The gaps also reduce the load on the fence in a thunderstorm, since some of the wind passes through instead of pushing on a solid face. That is useful on hilltop lots and open new-construction neighborhoods in Cabarrus, Gaston and York counties where there are few mature trees to break the wind. The pickets themselves dry faster after rain, which slows the green film that grows on shaded boards.

Semi-Privacy With Dogs and Close Neighbors

For containment, a semi-privacy fence works like any 6 ft fence as long as the gap is narrower than the animal. Small dogs and puppies can get through a wider gap than you might think, so tell us what you are fencing in. A dog that reacts to things it can see may also be more worked up behind a spaced fence than behind a solid one.

With neighbors, the question is distance. Across a typical backyard, a narrow-gap fence hides nearly everything. Where houses sit close and a patio is right at the lot line, people a few feet away will see through it. In that spot, consider solid fencing for that stretch and semi-privacy elsewhere.

Questions About Semi-Privacy Fences

What is a semi-privacy fence?

It is a tall fence, usually 6 ft, built with a small, even space between each picket. The spaces let air and light through while the pickets still break up the view. It sits between a solid privacy fence, which blocks everything, and a picket fence, which is mostly decorative.

How much can people see through a semi-privacy fence?

From across a yard or the street, very little. They may notice shapes and movement but not detail. From a few feet away, someone can look through the gaps. A narrower gap gives more screening. We can show you photos of finished fences at different spacings so you can judge.

What is a scalloped top fence?

A scalloped fence has a top edge that dips in a gentle curve between each pair of posts, highest at the posts and lowest in the middle. It is a decorative profile cut after the pickets are installed. It costs more than a flat top because of the added layout and cutting.

Is semi-privacy cheaper than a full privacy fence?

Slightly, in many cases, because spacing the pickets means fewer boards per foot. The frame, posts, concrete and labor are the same, so the savings are modest. A scalloped top or cedar pickets can cancel that out. A free estimate will show the real numbers for your fence line.

Will a semi-privacy fence hold up better in wind?

Generally, yes. Wind passing through the gaps puts less force on the posts than it would on a solid fence of equal height. It is one reason we suggest spaced styles for open, exposed lots. Post setting still does most of the work in keeping a fence upright.

Can a semi-privacy fence be used around a pool?

Possibly, but do not assume so. Pool barriers have to meet code requirements, and the North Carolina residential code limits the size of openings in the barrier among other things. Whether a given picket spacing complies has to be checked against the code that applies to your property. Ask us about pool fencing and we will go through the requirements with you.

Do HOAs in the Charlotte area allow semi-privacy fences?

Many do, and some prefer them to solid fences, particularly near streets and common areas. Each association writes its own rules on style, height and location. Check your covenants or ask the architectural committee. We can supply a drawing and specifications to submit with your request.
