Fence Installation in Ashbrook
Fence installation in Ashbrook is close-quarters work on established Charlotte lots. The neighborhood sits near Park Road and Woodlawn Road, south of Uptown, and much of it was built as single-story brick homes in the middle of the last century. The yards are a comfortable size, the trees are tall, and many houses have been renovated or replaced with something larger.
QC Fence Contractors has an Ashbrook office on Mockingbird Lane, at 1515 Mockingbird Ln Ste 400a, Charlotte, NC 28209, and installs and replaces fences in Ashbrook and the neighborhoods beside it, including Madison Park and Sedgefield. Six foot wood privacy is the usual request, often in a dressier style such as board-on-board with cap and trim or a horizontal design to go with a renovation. Picket and aluminum fences go in along front and side yards.
Ashbrook is part of the City of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County. Older Charlotte neighborhoods like this one often have no active homeowners association, which leaves the city's rules as the ones that count. Those are covered below, along with what older lots mean for a new fence.
Fencing an Older Charlotte Lot
The first question on an Ashbrook lot is where the line is. Fences, hedges and chain link put up over the decades do not always follow the deed. When a house changes hands or gets rebuilt, the new survey sometimes shows the old fence a foot or two off. We build to the survey pins, and where the pins are missing we recommend having them reset before a new fence makes the old error permanent.
Old chain link is everywhere in this part of Charlotte, usually with its posts in concrete and vines grown through the fabric. Removing it is slower than removing wood, and the footings come out with it. Many owners replace it with wood privacy, which changes how the yard feels more than any other single project.
Privacy matters more after a renovation. When a one-story house next door becomes two stories, a six foot fence no longer screens the patio from the upstairs windows. A taller fence is not always allowed, so the fix is often placement: a privacy screen close to the seating area does more than a taller fence at the property line.
Trees and service lines round out the picture. Mature oaks set where posts can go, and older homes have utility services running across back yards in places newer subdivisions never would. Both get worked out before digging.

City of Charlotte Rules That Apply in Ashbrook
Fence height and placement in Ashbrook fall under Charlotte's Unified Development Ordinance, with different limits for front yards than for side and rear yards. Building permits are issued by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. In the neighborhood zoning districts, Section 17.2.D limits a fence to five feet in the front setback, six feet in the side setback and eight feet in the rear setback. Check the limits with the city for your lot, particularly if you want anything over six feet.
Corner lots need a second look. The City of Charlotte says a fence or wall built along a city street requires a no-cost fence and wall certificate from the Charlotte Department of Transportation and cannot stand in the sight distance triangle at an intersection. Ashbrook has plenty of corner lots where that applies.
Ashbrook is not one of Charlotte's local historic districts, so the historic review that applies in Dilworth or Wilmore does not apply here. North Carolina does require three full working days of notice to NC811 before any digging.
Rules change, and this page is not legal advice. Confirm the requirements for your address with the local office before building.

Which Privacy Fence Makes Sense After a Renovation in Ashbrook?
If the house has been updated and the fence will be seen from a new patio or deck, spend on the style, not the height. Board-on-board with a cap and trim looks finished from both sides and stays closed up as the boards dry. A horizontal fence suits a modern rebuild. Plain dog-ear does the same screening job for less and is the right call along a back line nobody looks at.
Put the money where you sit. One dressed-up run beside the patio and a standard fence everywhere else is a common and sensible split on these lots.
Ashbrook Fence Questions
Do you install fences in the Ashbrook neighborhood of Charlotte?
QC Fence Contractors installs and replaces fences in Ashbrook and the nearby Park Road neighborhoods, including Madison Park and Sedgefield. The Ashbrook office is at 1515 Mockingbird Ln Ste 400a, Charlotte, NC 28209. Estimates are free and done at your home. Call (704) 769-9928 or request one with the form below.
Is there an HOA to deal with in Ashbrook?
City of Charlotte zoning applies to every Ashbrook lot, whether or not there is an association. Older streets here often have no active HOA, while newer townhome and infill developments usually do. Check your deed and closing documents for covenants, and confirm height and placement limits with the city.
How tall can my back yard fence be in Ashbrook?
Back yard fence height in Ashbrook is set by Charlotte's Unified Development Ordinance, with lower limits in front yards. Six feet is the common privacy height. In the neighborhood zoning districts the ordinance allows up to eight feet in the rear setback and six feet in the side setback, so confirm your lot's zoning with the city before planning anything taller.
Do I need a certificate for a fence on a corner lot?
A fence along a city street in Charlotte needs a no-cost fence and wall certificate from the Charlotte Department of Transportation. The fence also has to stay out of the sight distance triangle at the intersection. Corner lots in Ashbrook are where this comes up most. The certificate is requested before the fence is built.
Can you remove my old chain link fence?
Old chain link removal is routine on Ashbrook jobs. The fabric, rails, posts and concrete footings are taken out and hauled away, along with the vines that usually come with them. The new fence then goes in on the surveyed line, which is not always where the chain link was.
How long will a fence replacement take?
A fence replacement on an Ashbrook lot is typically one to three days on site. The NC811 utility locate, which requires three full working days of notice, comes first. Where there is no HOA review, the wait before the crew arrives is shorter than it is in newer Charlotte subdivisions.
What affects the price on an older Charlotte lot?
Footage, height and style set most of the price in Ashbrook. Removing chain link and its footings, working around large trees and carrying material through a narrow side yard add labor. Upgraded styles such as board-on-board with cap and trim cost more than dog-ear. The estimate is free and written.
My neighbor's fence is on the line. Can we share one?
A shared fence on the property line is common in Ashbrook and works when both owners agree in writing on the style, the cost and who maintains it. Each owner can also build inside their own line. We need a clear answer on ownership before removing any existing fence.
What is the most private wood fence?
Board-on-board is the most private standard wood fence. Its overlapping boards leave no gaps when the lumber shrinks, unlike a side-by-side dog-ear fence. Adding a cap and trim finishes the top. For screening from a neighbor's second story, placing a section near the patio works better than height.
Will digging post holes damage my trees?
Post holes are placed to miss major roots. On Ashbrook lots with mature oaks we adjust the post spacing and, where needed, shift the line slightly at the trunk. Holes near roots are dug carefully. Cutting large roots for the sake of even spacing is avoided because it weakens the tree.
Do you build fences for businesses on Park Road and Montford Drive?
Commercial fence work near Ashbrook includes patio and perimeter fence for restaurants, screening, dumpster enclosures and gates for shops and offices along Park Road, Woodlawn Road and Montford Drive. We measure on site and provide a written quote.
