Fence Installation in Belmont, From a Belmont Office
Fence installation in Belmont is the work of setting posts, rails and panels on a peninsula of red clay between two rivers, and most of the decisions come down to what the lot is doing. A mill house lot near Main Street is narrow and flat. A lot in McLean or Reflection Pointe drops toward Lake Wylie. A few acres off South Point Road call for something closer to pasture fence than privacy fence.
QC Fence Contractors keeps an office at 52a Ervin St in Belmont and builds new fences and full replacements across eastern Gaston County. Wood privacy, vinyl, aluminum and chain link make up most of the residential work. For businesses along Wilkinson Boulevard and the industrial sites near I-85 we build commercial chain link, gates and enclosures.
Estimates are free and happen at your property, because a fence quote written without walking the line is a guess. The sections below cover how Belmont ground and Belmont lots change a fence, what to check with the city before building, and the questions we hear most from Gaston County owners.
How Belmont Lots and Soil Shape a Fence
Belmont sits on Piedmont red clay. Clay holds a post well once concrete has cured, but it also holds water. A post hole dug in wet clay acts like a cup, so hole depth and a concrete collar crowned to shed water matter more here than they would in sandy ground. Wood posts that sit in standing water at the base are the ones that rot first.
Waterfront and near-water lots are a large share of the town. Along Lake Wylie and the South Fork, the yard usually slopes to the water and the owner wants to keep the view. That points to aluminum, which can follow a grade by racking the panel instead of stepping it, and which does not block the water the way a board fence does. Many lake communities also write the fence style into their covenants.
Older parts of town are different. The mill villages and the streets around downtown and Belmont Abbey College have small lots, shared driveways, mature oaks and fences that have been patched for decades. Replacement there is mostly about getting old concrete footings out without tearing up roots or a neighbor's flower bed, and then setting a straight line where the old one wandered.
South of town toward the Daniel Stowe Conservancy the lots open up. Split rail with welded wire, three and four board fence and woven wire all make sense on that kind of acreage, where the run is long and the goal is keeping a dog or a horse in, not blocking a view.

We are so happy with our new fence!! Our dog is in heaven now that he can just go out and run around!! Our neighbors have all commented how nice it looks!! Austin and Cody did an excellent job and we highly recommend QC Fence!
I just had an additional gate installed on my existing fence that QC also installed recently and everything is excellent, fence looks great and the additional gate is “hidden” from outside view exactly how I was hoping it would be. In addition to the wooden privacy fence, they installed a chainlink section around a sewer access on my property with gates (required for city access). Wasn’t thrilled with that city requirement lol but it looks great and it’s perfect. Trevor and everybody did an excellent job and I’m enjoying having a fence around my entire yard now! Thank you all!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the privacy fence Mark and his team at QC put up for me in three different locations! They were in/out of here in one day, from tear down to clean up! I would recommend Mark for any job, he and his guys were so nice, polite, respectful and friendly!
Top-notch quality! I hired QC Fence Contractors for a new fence at my property, and I'm impressed with the craftsmanship. They delivered exactly what I wanted, and their attention to detail is commendable.

Permits, HOA Approval and Utility Locates in Belmont
Fence rules inside the city limits come from the City of Belmont's development ordinance, and property outside the limits falls under Gaston County. The height limit for your fence depends on the zoning district, on whether the fence is in a front yard, and on whether the lot is on a corner, so get the number for your address from the city or the county. As a general pattern across North Carolina towns, front yard fences are held lower than side and rear yard fences, and corner lots have a sight triangle that has to stay clear. Call the Belmont planning office with your address before you settle on a height.
HOA approval is a separate step and, in the newer lake communities, usually the slower one. An architectural committee normally wants a plot plan with the fence line drawn on it, the style, the height and the color. We can give you the drawing and material details the application asks for.
North Carolina requires notice to NC811 at least three full working days before digging, so utility locates are built into the schedule for every Belmont job. Private lines such as irrigation, low voltage lighting and the wire to a detached garage are not marked by the utilities, so tell us about those at the estimate.
Rules change, and this page is not legal advice. Confirm the requirements for your address with the local office before building.

Is a New Fence or a Replacement the Right Call for Your Belmont Property?
Replace the fence when the posts are the problem. Push on a post at chest height: if it rocks in the ground or the wood is soft at the soil line, new pickets on old posts will not last. In Belmont clay that kind of rot usually shows up on the low side of the yard first, where water sits.
Repair makes sense when the posts are sound and the damage is limited to one stretch, such as a section a limb came down on. A new fence makes sense when there has never been one, when a pool is going in, or when a lake lot needs a barrier that does not block the water. The estimate visit is where we sort out which of those you have.
Belmont Fence Installation and Replacement Questions
Do you have a fence office in Belmont, NC?
QC Fence Contractors has an office at 52a Ervin St Ste 52A, Belmont, NC 28012. Estimates take place at your property, so most Gaston County customers never need to come in. Call (704) 802-1268 to set a time.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Belmont?
Permit and zoning requirements for a Belmont fence depend on the address. Property inside the city limits follows the City of Belmont's development ordinance and property outside follows Gaston County. Height, front yard placement and corner lot sight lines are the usual sticking points. Call the planning office with your address before material is ordered.
How long does a fence installation take in Belmont?
A typical Belmont backyard fence is one to three days of work on site. The wait before that is usually longer than the build: HOA approval, the NC811 locate window of three full working days, and material lead time for vinyl or aluminum in a special color all come first.
What drives the cost of a fence in Gaston County?
Footage is the biggest cost driver, followed by height, material and the number of gates. Belmont lots add a few of their own: slope toward Lake Wylie, tree roots on older in-town lots, rock, and tear-out of an existing fence. We measure all of that at the free estimate and put the number in writing.
What fence works best on a Lake Wylie lot in Belmont?
Aluminum is the usual answer on Belmont waterfront. It follows a slope without stepping, it does not block the view of the water, and it does not rot. Check your community covenants first, because lake neighborhoods often specify the style, the color and how close a fence may come to the shoreline.
Will my Belmont HOA need to approve the fence?
Most planned communities in Belmont require written approval before a fence goes up. The committee normally asks for a plot plan with the fence line marked, plus style, height and color. We provide the drawing and the material information so you can submit it, and the build is scheduled after approval comes back.
Do you replace old fences on the mill village lots near downtown Belmont?
Fence replacement on small in-town Belmont lots is routine work for us. The crew removes the old fence and its footings, hauls it away and builds the new line. On tight lots we plan access with you first, since material sometimes has to be carried in by hand past a house or a shared driveway.
How do you set posts in Belmont's red clay?
Posts are set in concrete below grade, with the top of the concrete sloped so water runs away from the post. Clay drains slowly, so a hole left open in rain fills up and stays full. Holes are dug, set and poured in the same visit where the schedule allows, which keeps wood posts out of standing water.
Does the finished side of a Belmont fence have to face out?
The finished side of a wood fence normally faces out, toward the street and the neighbors, with the rails and posts on your side. HOAs in Gaston County commonly require it. If you want both sides to look the same, a shadowbox or a board-on-board fence with cap and trim does that.
Do you call 811 before digging in Belmont?
A utility locate is requested for every Belmont job before the first post hole. North Carolina requires at least three full working days of notice to NC811. Public utilities mark their own lines. Irrigation, invisible dog fence wire and private electric runs are not marked, so point those out at the estimate.
Do you install pool fences in Belmont?
Pool barriers are a regular request in Belmont, mostly in aluminum. Pool fences follow the state residential code and are inspected with the pool, so height, gaps and gate latches are not a matter of preference. Our pool safety fence page explains the requirements and what an inspector looks at.
Do you build fences for businesses on Wilkinson Boulevard?
Commercial fence installation is part of what the Belmont office does. That includes chain link perimeters, ornamental fence at storefronts, dumpster and trash enclosures, and gates for yards and loading areas along Wilkinson Boulevard and near I-85. Site plans and bid documents can be sent ahead of the walk-through.
Do you stain or paint wood fences?
Fence staining is not a service QC Fence Contractors offers. We install pressure-treated pine and cedar and leave the finish to you or a painter. New treated lumber needs time to dry before it will take stain, and the wait in a humid Catawba River summer is longer than most people expect.
When is a fence not the right answer for a Belmont yard?
A fence is the wrong tool when the real problem is drainage or a property line dispute. A fence built across a swale can dam water against it, and a fence built on a guessed line can end up on a neighbor's land. Get the survey pins found and the water sorted first.
