Fence Installation in Gastonia

Fence installation in Gastonia covers more ground, in every sense, than it does in the towns closer to Charlotte. Inside the city there are mill village streets, historic districts, mid-century neighborhoods and new subdivisions. Around it there is real countryside, with pasture, woodlots and long gravel drives. And along I-85 and US 321 there is a working industrial base that needs security fence.

QC Fence Contractors installs and replaces fences for Gastonia homes, farms and businesses. Chain link, both galvanized and black, is a common request here, alongside wood privacy and vinyl. On acreage we build split rail with wire, board fence and woven wire. For commercial and industrial sites we build perimeters, gates and enclosures.

Gastonia is the seat of Gaston County and has its own planning department and its own historic district commission. What that means for a fence, and what the local terrain does to one, is laid out below.

Gaston County Ground and What It Means for Fence Posts

West of the Catawba the Piedmont starts to roll. Gastonia yards have more slope than Charlotte's, and the land climbs toward Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain to the west. On a slope a fence is either racked, with the rails following the grade, or stepped, with level sections that drop at each post. Racking keeps the bottom tight to the ground, which matters if the fence is for a dog. Stepping suits some styles better but leaves triangles underneath that need filling.

Rock is closer to the surface on the higher ground. A post hole that hits rock is drilled through or the post is moved along the line. Setting a short post on top of the rock is how fences end up leaning two winters later.

On open land the wind and the length of the run matter. A long solid fence across a hilltop takes more wind load than the same fence between two houses, so post size and spacing are chosen for it. For pasture, corners and gate posts are braced, because wire fence pulls on them constantly.

In the older city neighborhoods the concerns are the familiar ones: narrow lots, big trees, and existing chain link that has been in the ground for fifty years. In the Loray Mill area and the streets near downtown, houses sit close, and a replacement fence is mostly a matter of careful removal and a straight new line.

Gastonia Fence Rules and Historic Districts

Inside the city, fence height and placement are governed by the City of Gastonia's development ordinance, and the Planning Department can tell you what applies at your address. Outside the city limits, Gaston County's rules apply, and towns such as Dallas, Lowell and Ranlo have their own. We are not publishing height numbers because we could not confirm them against the city's own text.

Gastonia has two locally zoned historic districts, York-Chester and Brookwood. The city states that exterior work on a property in a local historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from its Historic District Commission before it starts, and its minor work application form names fencing. If you live in either district, talk to planning staff before choosing a fence.

Agricultural fencing on rural land is treated differently from a subdivision fence, including where barbed or electrified wire is permitted. Ask the county about your parcel's zoning. North Carolina requires three full working days of notice to NC811 before digging, in the city and in the country alike.

Rules change, and this page is not legal advice. Confirm the requirements for your address with the local office before building.

Chain Link, Wood or Rail: What Does Your Gastonia Property Need?

Decide by purpose. To keep a dog in and see through the fence, chain link does it for the least money and lasts. To block a view, wood or vinyl privacy is the answer. To mark a boundary on acreage or hold livestock, rail or wire fence covers distance at a sensible cost per foot.

Many Gastonia properties need two of these: privacy fence near the house and something open along a long back line. Mixing them is normal and usually cheaper than running one type around the whole property.

Gastonia Fence Questions

Do you install fences in Gastonia, NC?

QC Fence Contractors installs and replaces fences in Gastonia and across Gaston County, including Dallas, Lowell and Bessemer City. We come to the property to measure, and the estimate is free. Call (704) 802-1268 or use the form on this page.

Do I need approval for a fence in York-Chester or Brookwood?

A fence in Gastonia's York-Chester or Brookwood local historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts. The city says this applies to work on the exterior of a property, and its minor work application form names fencing. The certificate comes from the Historic District Commission. Contact the Planning Department early.

Who sets fence rules in Gastonia?

Fence height and placement inside Gastonia are set by the city's development ordinance and administered by the Planning Department. Property outside the city falls under Gaston County or a neighboring town. Give the office your address and planned height, and ask about front yard and corner lot limits.

How long does it take to put up a fence in Gastonia?

A Gastonia yard fence is usually built in one to three days. Sloped or rocky lots take longer, and so do long farm runs with braced corners. Before the build comes the NC811 locate, which needs three full working days, and delivery of materials.

What makes a fence cost more in Gaston County?

Length, height and material set the base price of a Gaston County fence. Slope, rock, old fence removal and gates add to it. Chain link costs less per foot than wood or vinyl privacy, and farm fence costs less per foot again over long runs. We measure and quote in writing at no charge.

Is chain link a good fence for a Gastonia yard?

Chain link is a practical yard fence in Gastonia, particularly for dogs and for larger lots. It lasts, it follows slopes and it costs less than privacy fence. Black vinyl coated chain link looks lighter against trees than galvanized. Some subdivisions restrict it, so check your covenants.

How do you fence a sloped yard?

A sloped yard is fenced by racking or stepping. Racked fence follows the ground so the bottom stays tight, which suits chain link, aluminum and most wood fences built on site. Stepped fence keeps each section level and drops at the posts. The grade of your Gastonia lot decides which works.

Do you build farm and pasture fence outside Gastonia?

Farm fence is built on acreage around Gastonia, Dallas and Bessemer City. Split rail with welded wire, board fence and woven wire are the common types, with braced corners and gates sized for equipment. Tell us which animals the fence is for so the wire and height are right.

Can I use barbed wire on my property?

Barbed wire rules depend on zoning. It is generally a livestock and industrial material and is commonly restricted in residential districts. Whether it is allowed on your Gaston County parcel is a question for the city or county zoning office. We confirm zoning before quoting any barbed wire.

Do you install security fencing for industrial sites near I-85?

Industrial fencing in Gastonia includes security chain link, cantilever and swing gates, privacy slats and interior partitions for plants, warehouses and equipment yards along I-85 and US 321. Site plans are welcome ahead of a walk-through, and pricing comes from measured footage.

Do you replace old fences in Gastonia's mill neighborhoods?

Fence replacement on older Gastonia lots is common work. Old chain link or wood is removed with its footings and hauled off. On narrow mill village lots we plan access first and confirm the line against the survey, since many old fences were set by eye.
