Fence Installation in Matthews

Fence installation in Matthews tends to be about replacing something. The town filled in during the 1980s and 1990s, and a large share of the wood fences from that period are now on their second or third round of repairs. The lots are generous by current standards, the trees have had forty years to grow, and the fence that went in with the house was never meant to last this long.

The QC Fence Contractors office that serves Matthews is on Sardis Road North, at 1811 Sardis Rd N #207A, Charlotte, NC 28270. Its street address is in Charlotte, which borders the town, and from there we install and replace fences for Matthews homes and businesses. Wood privacy is the usual request, along with aluminum and chain link, and vinyl in the associations that approve it. We also build for the commercial strip along Independence Boulevard and Matthews Township Parkway and for the churches, schools and medical offices spread through town.

Matthews is a town with its own planning office, inside Mecklenburg County, and that split shows up in how a fence gets approved. The details are below, along with what Matthews lots do to a fence and answers to the questions owners here ask us.

What Matthews Lots Do to a Fence

Mature trees are the defining condition. Oaks, pines and sweetgums planted when the subdivisions were new now stand over the property lines, and they do two things to a fence. Falling limbs break sections every storm season, and roots lift or block post holes. A replacement in Matthews often uses the old line but not the old post locations, because the tree has grown into where the post was.

Shade and leaf litter keep the bottom of a wood fence damp. Pickets that touch the ground wick water and rot from the bottom up, so we hold them off the soil. In heavily shaded yards a steel post behind a wood fence solves the problem of wood posts rotting at grade.

Creeks run through much of the town. Four Mile Creek and its branches have greenway and floodplain along them, and lots that back up to a creek usually carry a buffer or an easement on the plat. A fence can often go to the edge of that area but not into it, which is something to read off the survey before the line is chosen.

On the Union County side, toward Stallings, Indian Trail and Weddington, lots get larger and newer. Aluminum around pools and three-rail or split rail fence with wire along a long rear line both show up there.

The team did exactly what I needed. They were a reasonable price, the people are SUPER nice, and they work quickly. Of all the things that you hope for in a fence contracting team, from start to finish, they checked all the boxes. They were extremely transparent while providing an estimate. They were flexible on start time due to our vacation. They demolished the existing fence on day 1 and had the new fence installed by end of day 2! The trend started with my neighbor and carried on all down the block and further into the neighborhood. It seems I'm far from the only person who is thrilled with the work received. Highly recommend!

Matthews Fence Approval: Town, County and HOA

Zoning in Matthews belongs to the Town of Matthews, under its own development ordinance, and the town's Planning and Development office is where fence height and placement questions are answered. Building permits, when one is needed, come from Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. Fence height numbers for Matthews that appear on other websites are not always current. Call the town with your address and ask what applies.

Across North Carolina the pattern is lower fences in front yards, taller ones allowed in side and rear yards, and a clear sight triangle at corners and driveways. Expect Matthews to follow that general shape, and confirm the specifics.

Older Matthews subdivisions sometimes have recorded covenants but no active association, while newer ones have a committee and a form. Find out which you have. North Carolina also requires three full working days of notice to NC811 before digging, and the locate is scheduled as part of the job.

Rules change, and this page is not legal advice. Confirm the requirements for your address with the local office before building.

Is It Time to Replace a Thirty Year Old Matthews Fence?

Age alone does not condemn a fence, but the signs are easy to read. Look at the posts where they meet the ground. Dark, soft wood there, or a post you can rock with one hand, means the structure is done even if the pickets look passable. Look along the top line too. A fence that waves or leans is telling you several posts have let go.

If the posts pass and the trouble is one section under a tree, repair it. If they fail, replacing the whole run costs less over the next decade than patching it a section at a time, and it gives you the chance to move to steel posts or a different material.

Matthews Fence Questions

Do you install fences in Matthews, NC?

QC Fence Contractors installs and replaces fences throughout Matthews, from downtown to the neighborhoods off Sardis Road, Weddington Road and Idlewild Road. The office that serves Matthews is at 1811 Sardis Rd N #207A, Charlotte, NC 28270, and its street address is in Charlotte. The estimate costs nothing and is done in your yard. Call (704) 271-9061 or send the form on this page.

Who do I ask about fence rules in Matthews?

Fence height and placement in Matthews are zoning questions for the Town of Matthews Planning and Development office. Building permits, where required, are issued by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. Have your address and the planned height ready when you call, and ask about corner lot and front yard limits specifically.

How long does a fence replacement take in Matthews?

A Matthews fence replacement usually takes one to three days on site, tear-out included. Scheduling depends on the NC811 locate, which needs three full working days, any HOA approval and material delivery. Yards with heavy tree cover take a little longer because post locations are worked out around the roots.

What affects fence cost on a Matthews lot?

Footage, height and material set the base cost of a Matthews fence. Removing the old fence, digging through roots, working around trees and adding wide gates raise it. Larger Matthews lots simply have more feet of fence than a newer subdivision lot. The written estimate is free.

Why do wood fence posts rot so fast under trees?

Wood posts rot where air, moisture and soil meet, right at the ground line. Shaded Matthews yards stay damp and covered in leaves, which keeps that zone wet for most of the year. Steel posts with a wood fence attached remove the weak point without changing how the fence looks from the street.

Can you build a fence around tree roots without hurting the tree?

Post holes are placed between major roots, not through them. On a Matthews lot with mature oaks that means uneven post spacing in places and sometimes a small jog in the line. It looks deliberate when done well, and it keeps the tree healthy and the post in solid ground.

What chain link options are there besides plain galvanized?

Black vinyl coated chain link is the main alternative to bare galvanized. The dark coating recedes against trees and shrubs, which suits wooded Matthews back yards. It is a practical dog fence where an HOA allows chain link, and privacy slats can be added on commercial sites.

My lot backs up to Four Mile Creek. Can I fence it?

A creek lot in Matthews usually has a buffer, floodplain or greenway easement shown on the recorded plat. Fences are commonly limited or prohibited inside those areas. Bring the survey to the estimate. We set the line at the edge of the restricted area and suggest you confirm with the town.

Does my older Matthews neighborhood need HOA approval?

Some older Matthews subdivisions have recorded restrictions with no active association, and others have a working committee. Your closing documents or the county register of deeds will show which applies. Where a committee exists, written approval comes first, and we provide the drawing and material details for the application.

Do you install aluminum fences around pools in Matthews?

Aluminum pool fence is a common Matthews request. A pool barrier must meet the state residential code for height, openings and gate latching, and it is inspected with the pool. Our pool safety fence page explains the requirements. Mention the pool when you call so the estimate covers code-rated gates.

Do you do commercial fencing in Matthews?

Commercial fence work in Matthews includes chain link, ornamental fence, dumpster and trash enclosures and gates for retail centers, offices, churches and schools. Much of it is along Independence Boulevard, Matthews Township Parkway and Monroe Road. Quotes are based on a site visit or your site plan.
